RIFLE
The Stevens Model 200 Rifle needs no introduction. It’s one of the most iconic and popular rifles of the twentieth century. In the hands of hunters, competition shooters, and recreational target shooters alike, the Model 200 has delivered versatility, dependability, and accuracy for decades.
As a Stevens Model 200 enthusiast, I have owned her for nearly twenty years now, and I can easily vouch for her priceless characteristics. When asked to write a review, I don’t know where to begin. There are so many different factors that make the Stevens Model 200 Rifle so great, that even after twenty years, I am still learning something new about her each and every time I take her to the range.
The Stevens Model 200 rifle is a bolt-action centerfire rifle chambered in a variety of cartridges. It is designed to be an inexpensive, versatile, and dependable rifle for buyers of all budgets. Manufactured in several variations, the Model 200 is the ultimate choice for a budget-conscious rifle shooter.
The design and build quality of the Stevens Model 200 rifle are excellent. From the moment I unboxed her, it was evident to me that Stevens put a lot of thought into its creation. The receiver is made from one solid steel block with a matte black finish. The barrel is constructed from stainless steel, and the stock is walnut and fits tightly to the action. All external metal hardware such as the trigger and magazine well are made of aluminum with a black anodized finish.
The action is smooth and dependable. The bolt offers a very clean 70-degree throw for quick and easy cartridge loading, and the trigger pull is surprisingly light at 3 ½ lbs. This is unusual for rifles under $400, and I think it is something that truly sets Stevens and their models apart from the competition. The safety is also easy to access and user friendly; it is conveniently located on the bolt slide.
The Stevens Model 200 is a dream to shoot. Although it has a short barrel length at 22” inches, I have found that it performs superbly at range distances up to 300 yards with .223/5.56 ammunition. I have also found that it is very accurate with smaller targets at a closer range, and I’ve been able to consistently hit soda cans at fifty yards.
The rifle is also very lightweight, making it a great choice for long hikes through the woods or when traveling to multiple shooting locations. It weighs only 6 ½ pounds, so it should not be too much of a burden to lug around.
Overall, I believe the Stevens Model 200 is one of the best values for the money when it comes to a budget rifle. She has held up well over the last twenty years in my possession, and I intend to keep shooting her for many more years to come. If you’re in the market for a dependable, accurate, and affordable gun that won’t break the bank then look no further than the Stevens Model 200 rifle.
