Sako’s latest entry in the entry-level rifle market is the S20. Coming to market in early 2021, it’s one of the most impressive additions to the lineup in recent years. An upgraded version of the classic SAKO 85, the S20 is built to last and designed to be the go-to first rifle for a growing army of new shooters.

The S20 is offered in three models: the S20 Classic, the S20 Sporter, and the S20 Varmint. Each model is built on the same skeletonized aluminum chassis, a comfortable 50-degree pistol grip, and a magwell which allows for the quick loading of detachable magazines.

The S20 Classic is the base model, and it’s a perfect fit for a new shooter looking for a reliable workhorse. It features a 19-inch cold hammer-forged chrome-moly barrel, three-lugging action, and a 10-round magazine. It’s offered in two finishes: blued and stainless steel.

A step up from the Classic is the S20 Sporter. This model offers an upgraded 20-inch barrel coated in Kite’s bronze alloy, a four-lugging action, and a five-round magazine. While still a great value for the money, the S20 Sporter is better suited for shooters who will be stalking game in the thick woods.

The third model of the S20 is the Varmint model. Built for long-range target shooting, the Varmint features a 24-inch bull barrel, four-lugging action, and a 10-round magazine. This model also comes with a fiberglass stock with a sharp pistol grip, which makes it easier to handle heavier recoil.

While the S20 is built on a common platform, each model carries its own unique features and design elements. Other features on all models include a two-stage adjustable trigger, full-length aluminum Picatinny rail, and a Picatinny accessory rail mounted on the forend. All models also utilize Sako’s push-forward barrel design, which makes recoil and muzzle rise a thing of the past.

The overall build quality and attention to detail is impressive. Sako didn’t simply call upon their past designs to craft the S20. Instead, they took a step back and re-evaluated what modern shooters need in an entry-level rifle. The design is sleek and modern, without sacrificing its classic foundation.

In addition to the design elements, the S20 also features improved accuracy and ergonomics. The cold hammer-forged barrel provides tighter tolerances for more consistent accuracy, while the adjustable trigger makes it easier for the average shooter to get the most out of the rifle.

Accuracy is further improved by the use of Sako’s FinFire2.6 system, which allows the shooter to easily calibrate the rifle’s zero without having to make any adjustments to the rifle itself. This feature ensures that the shooter can get the most out of the rifle without having to learn how to adjust the trigger or sights.

The ergonomics of the S20 are also top-notch. The 50-degree pistol grip is comfortable to hold, and the three-position safety is easy to engage. The aluminum chassis features a glass-filled nylon buttstock, which absorbs recoil and provides optimal weight distribution.

Overall, the S20 is an impressive entry-level rifle and a welcome addition to the Sako lineup. It features great build quality, reliable accuracy, and top-notch ergonomics. It’s perfect for the new shooter looking for a reliable workhorse, as well as the experienced shooter who wants an upgrade from their current rifle.

If you’re in the market for an entry-level rifle that won’t break the bank, the S20 is the way to go. With excellent construction, quality components, and reliable accuracy, the S20 is an ideal choice for any shooter.
