SIG SAUER P238

The SIG Sauer P238 is an impressive addition to the handgun market and one of the most popular options in its class. Developed for concealed carry and personal protection, the P238 packs power, range, and accuracy in a surprisingly compact package. Though it doesn’t carry the cachet of its larger cousin, the well-known P226, the P238 lives up to the SIG Sauer commitment to quality guns and the standards of reliable operation and accuracy.

At first glance, it's easy to underestimate the P238. The sleek matte-black two-tone finish and pleasingly compact frame place this gun firmly in the “cute but lethal” category, but its diminutive size hides the strength that lies beneath. Though it's certainly no-frills, the P238 is a highly functional and effective pistol that is suitable for a variety of self-defense and range work.

The P238 is chambered for .380 ACP (sometimes called .380 Auto), so it offers plenty of power for a self-defense pistol. The grip frame is a bit slim, but the well-crafted contours feel comfortable in the hand, and the extended beavertail provides a solid platform for recoil management and good purchase on the slide. For those with larger or longer hands, the reach to the trigger can be awkward and feel wrong, while users with small hands will find it perfect. However, the small size also means that there are only two fingers able to fit on the handle, so those with larger hands may prefer the somewhat higher capacity options offered in the P320 and other full-sized models.

The extensive machining and careful fit-and-finish of the P238 make it an incredibly reliable sidearm. The P238 is fitted with SIG's Excellence barrel rifling, which imparts precise grooves in the barrel to ensure a tight fit with the exact size and shape of the ammo, creating a better seal to create efficient combustion, fast and consistent cycling, and increased accuracy. It also has an external extractor, an ultra-smooth and reliable SIG Sauer short-reset trigger, and a whole host of smart safety features, including a loaded chamber indicator and a manual safety that adds an extra layer of security. There is also the option of a flat-faced trigger (available for the standard P238 and the FAPC model) that some shooters find more comfortable.

The P238 has a single-action trigger system, so the trigger pull is relatively light and without creep or take-up. It provides a consistent break with very little over-travel, allowing for fast, precise shot placement. The P238 is also surprisingly accurate; its 2.7" barrel offers plenty of length to take full advantage of the .380 round, and the light single-action trigger enables precise aiming and easy follow-up shots. Regardless of its small size, it produces 25-yard groups just as tight as much larger firearms.

When it comes to ammo, the P238 prefers premium hollow-point rounds, especially those within the 115- and 124-grain range, although it can also handle lighter rounds of 90 and 100 grains. Some shooters have noticed that the P238 can be picky with self-defense ammunition; while some brands might function fine, others can be exceedingly difficult to feed or cause failures to fire. This is a common occurrence with such small handguns and can be remedied by sticking to the range-style FMIs and ball-type ammunition.

The magazines are well designed, and when loaded, offer seven rounds of .380 ACP. The polymer follower is also easily removable for cleaning, and each magazine has a small chrome-plated brass strip that helps avoid the dreaded “limp-wrists” malfunction.

The P238 is quite lightweight for its size, tipping the scales at just 16 ounces unloaded and 20 ounces loaded. Despite its teeny-tiny frame, the P238 feels surprisingly sturdy in the hand. It has a solid heft and packs more punch than one might expect.

In terms of accessorizing, there aren't many options available for the P238, save for a few sight replacements and LaserMax lasers (though the lasers are only compatible on some models). Even so, this gun looks great right out of the box with minimal modification.

In conclusion, the SIG Sauer P238 is an excellent choice for shooters who want a small, lightweight handgun that is still capable of knocking down targets. It is surprisingly accurate, reliable, and well-crafted, and its simple operation and few safety features make it a user-friendly option for new shooters. Its slim size and lightweight design make it easy to conceal and comfortable to carry, while its rugged construction and excellent overall quality make it a reliable, compact solution for when you need an effective, tough defensive piece.
