The hit comic series, Security 9 by David Finch, is both a gripping and thought-provoking story. The story follows the life of Marcus Wright, an ex-convict, who now works as a security guard in a high-end office building to make ends meet. On his first day, he is tasked with protecting a mysterious item in the building and soon finds himself wrapped up in a web of criminal activities. Security 9 is a roller coaster ride of suspense, mystery, and action.
The series starts off quickly with the introduction of Marcus's character. He is a former prison convict. This is a bold move for Finch, as one would normally expect to find the protagonist of a comic to be a hero with a seemingly spotless record. On the contrary, Marcus is presented as someone who has to make amends for his murky past. Finch cleverly uses Marcus's past as a form of character development and paints a vivid picture of his struggles both inside and out of prison.
The story then progresses to focus on Marcus’s job as a security guard. As a consequence of his employment, he is tasked with safeguarding the top floor of the company’s building. It’s here that the main plot of the series kicks off, as Marcus discovers that the object he is guarding is more than just another mundane item. He soon finds himself drawn into a tangled web of criminal activities run by an elite group of criminals. By taking on the role of protecting those in need, Marcus finds himself caught in a game of power and deceit and must use his wits to try and defeat the criminals at their own game.
The story progresses at a brisk pace, while never compromising on the detail of the characters or story arc being written. It quickly dives straight into the action and the tension is maintained throughout. As mentioned, Marcus is the hero, but the villains too are equally compelling and interesting characters. Each one has their own agenda and motivations. What makes the series stand out, however, is the way it weaves the characters’ personal lives into the overall story. This human element gives a real sense of depth to the characters, and the story as a whole.
The artwork in this series is simply stunning. Finch’s pencils and inks are gorgeous and highly detailed. The colors are vibrant and dynamic, and every panel is alive with activity. The action sequences especially are absolutely electrifying, with violent explosions and frenzied fights. Finch really brings the book to life with his work.
The writing of this series is also top notch. Finch has crafted an intricate plot that twists and turns, taking readers on a wild ride. There are many unexpected developments and interesting characters. The pacing is also perfectly judged, with just the right amount of plot exposition and character development interspersed throughout.
The premise of Security 9 is something that many comic fans have seen before; however, Finch has managed to inject new life into the formula. The series is well written and extremely entertaining. It also has a strong social commentary, which is framed effectively through Marcus’s struggles between being a socially accepted honest working man and a criminal. Security 9 is a thrilling read for any comic fan and is highly recommended.
