Rosso 88 is a relatively unknown Italian rock band from Modena that formed in 2008. The lineup consists of frontman Martino Rossi, lead guitarist Matteo Rossi, bassist and keyboardist Lorenzo Voci, drummer Riccardo Gianna and guitarist Luca Grosi. Originally starting off as a garage rock band, they have since grown to become a prominent Italian rock band with a distinct sound.

What sets Rosso 88 apart from other rock bands is their commitment to genre experimentation. While each of their albums tend to stick to classic garage rock foundations, Rosso 88 push the boundaries of the genre to explore realms of psychedelic dream pop, indie post-rock, shoegaze, and even acoustic folk. At the same time, they are not afraid to dabble in more off-the-wall sounds, such as blues rock and garage punk.

It’s this mix of experimental and classic influences that make Rosso 88 such an attractive listen. Each of their releases is instantly recognizable as theirs, yet explore new music ideas and sounds, creating a fresh and dynamic collection of songs. And while they do lean into garage rock, their modular approach to sound design sets them apart from their contemporaries.

Their first full-length album, From the Valley of the Shadow was released in 2012 and quickly put them on the map as an up and coming Italian rock band. While the album is unmistakably garage rock in nature, it is also more psychedelic, with dreamy reverb-drenched guitars and hazy harmonies. It’s both an accessible entry point to Rosso 88’s sound, as well as a testament to their ingenuity and willingness to explore new sonic territory.

From the Valley of the Shadow's successor, Solitary Thoughts, was released the following year and showed Rosso 88 at their most ambitious and daring. Far from a rehash of their classic sound, the album blends together traditional rock styles and influences such as blues, folk, and punk with their signature sound. The result is a vibrant and vivid album that feels like a journey, taking the listener through a range of emotions and across a vast musical landscape.

In 2015, Rosso 88 released their third studio album, From the Depths of Empathy, which cemented their status as one of the most exciting rock acts in Italy. Deeply personal, this album dives into the core of the band’s emotions, exploring themes of pain, joy, love, and loss. It’s a mix of everything Rosso 88 does best, from indie-rock and post-rock to alt-rock, punk, and shoegaze.

While From the Depths of Empathy was certainly a standout release, their 2019 album Threnody marked a new level of achievement for the band. Combining raw emotion with thoughtful songwriting and intricate musicianship, this album is a testament to the band’s growth and evolution. The band dials back the experimentation and dives deeper into their traditional sound, crafting a collection of powerful garage rock anthems.

Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Rosso 88’s music is its production. Each of the band’s albums sounds pristine, with each instrument sounding exactly how it should. This is a feat not many bands can achieve, let alone when working in a garage rock style. The production quality also highlights how skillful the band’s musicianship is, thanks to the immaculate performances on every track.

In conclusion, it’s obvious why Rosso 88 is gaining traction on the world stage. Their willingness to mix classic rock styles with daring musical experimentation and impeccable production make them a must-listen for fans of classic rock and the modern rock scene alike. With a promising future head of them, the future looks bright for this Italian rock band.
