Cimarron Frontier is a 2019 American western directed by Shawn Slater and starring Cody Hackman, Bruce Willis and John Travolta. The film follows the story of a band of outlaws led by a former lawman as they attempt to rob a bank in a small Arizona town. Despite their differences, they must all band together in order to survive the impending onslaught of deadly people coming for them.

As a fan of westerns, I was most certainly interested when presented with the opportunity to watch Cimarron Frontier. I had seen and enjoyed both Bruce Willis and John Travolta in other films, and I thought the idea of a western helmed by a relative newcomer was intriguing. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality and complexity of the movie, which was definitely more than I expected.

The story of Cimarron Frontier follows a group of outlaws and former lawmen who have banded together in order to pull off a daring bank heist in a small Arizona town. The group consists of Cody Hackman’s Colt, an ex-lawman who is determined to put away his troubled past and make something of himself; Bruce Willis’ Kip, the leader of the group, who puts a lot of trust in Colt; and John Travolta’s Mook, the unpredictable wildcard of the group. The film follows their attempt to rob the bank and the dangers they face along the way, including a corrupt sheriff who will stop at nothing to bring them down.

The most impressive aspect of Cimarron Frontier is its ensemble cast. The film features a who’s-who of veteran talent, including Clint Eastwood, Ed Harris and Forest Whitaker. All of the actors do a great job of conveying the complexity of their characters and their interpersonal relationships. Even though I had some issues with the character of Kip, Bruce Willis still manages to deliver a strong and charismatic performance as the leader of the group. I also liked Cody Hackman’s performance as Colt, a man who is struggling to escape his troubled past. He brings a lot of depth to the character, and I was particularly impressed with the way he managed to convey Colt’s inner turmoil. Finally, John Travolta also does a great job in the role of Mook, the wildcard of the group. He manages to add a lot of humor and unpredictable energy into the mix, something that was definitely needed in a film such as this.

The cinematography of Cimarron Frontier is also top-notch. The film is definitely an ode to the classic westerns of the past, as it features beautiful shots of the vast Arizona landscapes and awe-inspiring shots of the outlaws riding their horses in pursuit of the law. The use of vibrant colors and shadows adds depth and atmosphere to the film. The overall tone of the film is quite atmospheric, and the pacing of the movie helps to keep the tension alive throughout.

The action sequences in Cimarron Frontier are also quite remarkable. Everything from the shootouts to the chases is impressively choreographed and well-shot. From the opening chase scene on horseback to the bank heist in the middle of a sandstorm, every action sequence feels intense and believable. The cinematography during these sequences enhances the sense of danger and urgency that the characters are feeling.

The one department where Cimarron Frontier falls a bit short is its script. Don’t get me wrong, there are some truly great moments throughout the film, especially in the dialogue between the characters. Unfortunately, most of the scenes in the film revolve around the characters talking about the same topics over and over again. The characters’ motivations and relationships often feel a bit shallow and predictable, leaving some of the characterizations feeling a bit flat. Additionally, the ending of the film feels quite rushed and inconclusive.

Overall, Cimarron Frontier is an enjoyable and surprisingly complex western. The cast does a great job in conveying the complexities of the characters and relationships amongst the group, and the action sequences are thrilling and well-choreographed. The cinematography is also stellar, with beautiful shots of the Arizona landscapes adding atmosphere to the film. The script does leave something to be desired, but this is ultimately a minor quibble given the overall quality of the film. If you’re a fan of westerns, I highly recommend checking out Cimarron Frontier.
