The iconic Browning A5 Magnum Twelve Shotgun is without a doubt one of the most iconic and beloved shotgun lines in the history of firearms. This time-honored classic has been in production since 1902 and has been a favorite of shooters, hunters, and law enforcement personnel for generations. As a lover of fine shotguns, I have had the chance to use a few vintage examples of this fine gun in the past and have been consistently impressed with the beauty, quality, and reliability that you get with the A5 Magnum Twelve.

To begin, the quality of the Browning A5 Magnum Twelve Shotgun is truly top-notch. The craftsmanship and attention to even the most minor detail is something that holds true for all Browning firearms, but even more so with the A5 Magnum Twelve. From the finely checkered stock and fore-end to the deep and rich blued finish, this shotgun exudes a certain quality and level of class that is rarely found in today’s shotguns.

Upon first inspection the A5 Magnun Twelve has a very distinct look that will set it apart from many other guns. The lines, curves, and angles are unmistakable as the gun’s Belgian origin is evident. The receiver is large and features a solid top, a feature that is a defining trait of the A5 design. The top is also contoured perfectly to make mounting and dismounting optics on the gun very straightforward. The profile of the gun is quite distinct from other semi-automatic shotguns due to the large chamber and magazine capacity. The gun itself is quite hefty, weighing in at around 9.5 pounds and this is partially a result of the durable construction and full length magazine tube that runs under the barrel.

When it comes down to actually using the gun, the A5 Magnum Twelve performs like few other shotguns. The action is smooth and predictable even after thousands of rounds and can be easily maintained with little more than a standard cleaning and oiling routine. For those who like it refined even further, there are a host of aftermarket upgrades available that allow you to truly customize the gun and make it perform even better. The gun utilizes Browning’s patented recoil operated Kinematic Drive System which significantly reduces felt recoil even with heavier loads. This system works off of a recoil spring above the barrel that helps to cycle the gun after each shot and reduces the felt recoil to the shooter dramatically.

The A5 Magnum Twelve is also incredibly reliable and will cycle almost any type of shotgun shell reliably. This is a great feature for those who like to hunt with a shotgun as you do not have to worry about whether your loads are similar enough to ensure reliable performance. The gun also features an adjustable barrel extension that allows the shooter to adjust the length of pull and helps to ensure that the shooter is comfortable when shooting.

The Browning A5 Magnum Twelve Shotgun is not only incredibly functional, but it is also extremely pleasing to look at. The blued finish on the receiver and barrel is deep, rich and provides a beautiful contrast to the classically checkered stock and fore-end. The oil finish that is used provides a barrier to the elements and also allows the gun to age gracefully. The scroll detailing and engraving that are present on the receiver also give the gun a classic touch and help to truly make it a gun that is a work of art.

As far as cons go, there are really not any glaring ones that I can point out with the Browning A5 Magnum twelve. If there is one thing I would point to, it would be that there are not a lot of aftermarket support for the old-school Belgian-made models. However, this is really more of a nuisance than a deal breaker as the gun is still plenty reliable right out of the box.

In closing, if you are in the market for a classic shotgun, the Browning A5 Magnum Twelve should be at the very top of your list. The quality, reliability, craftsmanship, and performance of the gun are all hallmarks of the Browning name and you really cannot go wrong with this time-honored classic. Whether you are using it for hunting, shooting, or just appreciating the beauty of the gun, the A5 Magnum Twelve will meet and exceed any and all of your expectations.

Who Should Buy

Browning A5 Magnum Twelve should be bought by anyone looking for a robust and reliable semi-automatic shotgun, as it is designed specifically for waterfowl and turkey hunting. It has an adjustable trigger pull and recoil compensation technology to help lessen the felt recoil of heavy magnum loads. Those with disabilities or restrictions that affect their shooting ability may also benefit from the increased adjustability and recoil compensation this shotgun offers.

Those who don't hunt and are not serious shooters probably should not buy the Browning A5 Magnum Twelve, as it is a high-quality, expensive shotgun that is not designed for use with light pressure shells. Furthermore, those who are unfamiliar or inexperienced with firearms should not purchase a shotgun like the Browning A5 Magnum Twelve until they have obtained proper training and are happy with their shooting skills.
