42 is a sports drama about a young man, Jackie Robinson, who became the first African American to ever play Major League Baseball in 1947. The story revolves around the struggles and triumphs of Jackie Robinson as he attempts to break the color barrier.

As a movie, 42 is a testament to the power of determination and eloquently portrays the human experience of discrimination. It shows a man, who is not strictly defined by the color of his skin, and who refuses to be bowed by the pressures of an oppressive system and instead strives to make a real and lasting change. Jackie Robinson’s story is as inspiring as it is enigmatic, and the movie does a tremendous job in bringing it to life.

The film opens at a time when segregation was the norm, and yet we see Jackie Robinson’s unwavering faith and deep conviction as he strives to overcome the obstacles that are placed in his way. Branch Rickey, played by Harrison Ford, spots the potential in Robinson and takes a strong risk in signing him to the Brooklyn Dodgers. It is not without difficulty, however, that Jackie is accepted by his all-white team and the incredible strength that he exhibits in the face of immense adversity is truly inspiring. Unlike many movies where the hero is portrayed as almost superhuman, Robinson’s character development is played realistically and every moment of his journey is filled with intense emotion and drama.

Equally impressive is the stellar backdrop against which most of the movie is set. For most of 42, we’re shown majestic old baseball stadiums, roaring crowds, and picturesque skylines. The era is perfectly captured by a mix of old-fashioned cinematography, authentic costumes, and sets.

The plot is strong, character development is solid, and the acting is excellent throughout. Chadwick Boseman plays Robinson with a mix of determination, fragility, and humor. Ford is likewise convincing in his role as the tough but fair Branch Rickey. And Nicole Beharie provides additional emotional depth as his resilient wife, Rachel. The supporting cast is also impressive, with the likes of Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, John C. McGinley, and Andre Holland all contributing memorable performances.

The movie manages to convey a spirit of hope in the face of rapid change in America - and the integral role that sport can have in making a real difference in people's lives. It is not just an inspirational story - but one which will stay in the minds of anyone who watches it. The message of 42 is clear: no matter who you are and where your roots may lie, with enough hard work, dedication, and resilience you can make a difference.

Although the movie does its best to tell an inspiring story of perseverance, it’s fair to say that it does fall short in certain areas. For one, those expecting a detailed recounting of the racial issues in America at the time will not necessarily be getting a full understanding. Indeed, certain aspects of the movie move quite quickly and, while some of the racist incidents are given context, others can feel almost glossed over. Also, there are times when the film’s sentimentality tends to overshadow the intricate details of the story. The last act, in particular, lacks some of the earlier drama and manages to be fairly predictable.

Nevertheless, 42 is an immensely powerful movie that provides a fitting tribute to its fascinating true-story protagonist. It accomplishes what it sets out to do - by emphasizing the importance of unwavering resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles- and provides a highly enjoyable and emotionally moving experience throughout.
