= 19

After the celebrated success of the ten–episode documentary series, 29 – 10 = 19, I, like most viewers, had high expectations for the film’s feature–length follow–up. The show had presented itself as one of the most comprehensive studies on the life of Nelson Mandela that had ever been released, and I was understandably curious to see if a feature film could present a level of detail and depth of analysis worthy of its subject. After watching the movie, I can now say that it is worthy of its namesake, a true demonstration of the best of cinema.

The film focuses on the final 3 years of Nelson Mandela’s life, starting in 2014 on his 95thbirthday and ending shortly after his passing in December of 2018. This chronological approach is used to highlight the human side of the leader in a way that few documentaries have ever managed to. It captures the raw emotions of Mandela as he faces his dwindling years, and it brings us into his innermost thoughts and reflections as he looks back at a life of extraordinary accomplishment. Mandela’s strength and courage in the face of adversity is captured and celebrated, and the film does an excellent job of drawing attention to his ability to overcome great obstacles while still radiating an abiding optimism throughout his struggles.

The documentary features interviews with many of Mandela’s closest friends and family, as well as with some of the key players in the apartheid struggle. Through these conversations, we are offered a rare glimpse into the inner workings of South Africa’s legendary leader. We learn of the lengths he went to to support his people, and of the challenges he faced both publicly and privately. We also get insight into the excruciatingly difficult decisions he had to make in the face of extraordinary pressure, and how even his greatest accomplishments often came at a tremendous cost. All of this is presented in the most amazingly comprehensive and impartial manner possible, giving us a solid understanding of the man who is now widely regarded as one of the greatest statesmen of the 20thcentury.

The movie also does an admirable job of weaving together the many different strands of Mandela’s life story. Much of this is done through archival footage, which effectively transports us back to key moments in the history of South Africa’s crushing apartheid regime. Interwoven with this footage are interviews with the likes of Desmond Tutu and former president of South Africa, FW de Klerk, who offer their own unique perspectives on the situation. These perspectives come together to provide an invaluable account of the struggle and the ultimate triumph that Mandela and his allies had fought for and achieved.

Equally important is the way that the movie depicts Mandela’s later years. This is a period of time that is rarely highlighted, and it is certainly one in which Mandela had moments of doubt and a sense of regret for the things he had been unable to do during his lifetime. This is presented in such a moving way that we are able to fully appreciate the gravity of the situation Mandela was in, as well as the courage he maintained in his final days.

29 – 10 = 19 also contains some of the most beautiful cinematography I’ve seen in a film in a long time. The visuals on hand truly capture Mandela’s world and our African experience in all its stunning glory. From sweeping panoramic shots of the landscapes to intimate close–ups of Mandela’s face, the visuals help to tell his story in a way that few other documentaries have ever managed to do.

The movie also has a powerful soundtrack that seamlessly blends traditional African styles with more contemporary influences. Every scene of the movie has its own individual soundscape, allowing us to experience all of its emotion and beauty on a much more intimate level. This helps to bring the film’s themes and messages home in a way that would have been impossible had the soundtrack not been so carefully crafted.

Finally, I must also mention the stellar acting performances on display in 29 – 10 = 19. Everyone involved in the production brings a unique energy to the film, which helps to bring a level of naturalism that is often lacking in biopics. The cast is led by Idris Elba in the titular role, who does an outstanding job of capturing Mandela’s nuances and spirit, making him an instantly iconic figure.

In short, 29 – 10 = 19 has met and surpassed all of my expectations. It is an impressive and detailed study of a figure who changed history, and it offers a level of insight that is unmatched by anything else I’ve seen in the past few years. It is a fitting and fittingly beautiful tribute to Nelson Mandela, and a film that I highly recommend to anyone interested in his legacy.
